Leonardo DiCaprio: It Had to Happen Sometime

It finally happened. What has been 22 years in the making all came true during The Oscars this year for the one and only, Leonardo DiCaprio. It might have come to a surprise to some, but to Leo it seemed like he was truly ready to finally accept his first Oscar.

“It was about time for him to get one,” junior Carver Squiers said.

Throughout those 22 years, Leo was nominated for six Academy Awards ranging from Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role to Best Motion Picture of the Year. Set aside the Academy Awards, DiCaprio has won 45 awards while being nominated for over 150.

“Seeing him win was the best part of the Oscars,” senior Abby Parris said.

It seems as though once a name is announced during The Oscars, a speech is inevitable. For DiCaprio this was no different. While most speeches seem to be a long list of “thank you’s,” Leo focused on issues involving the whole world, primarily climate change.

Lastly I just want to say this: Making The Revenant was about man’s relationship to the natural world. A world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow. Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating,” stated DiCaprio.

Instantly, Leo’s speech started trending all over the internet. Twitter alone had over 440,000 posts within the first 60 seconds of Leo’s speech, as stated by CBC News. Leonardo seems to have something about him that the people just love. Maybe it’s just that he cares? Not only about his future, but everyone’s.

At the end of his speech, Leonardo DiCaprio said, “I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted. Thank you so very much.”
