The audience was able to vote on their favorite acts by texting in to the numbers found on the Orono’s Got Talent program.

On Fri. Mar. 14, Orono High School (OHS) hosted it’s annual “Orono’s Got Talent” competition. Taking place in the auditorium, the event allowed high school students competed for prizes. At the end of all of the acts, the audience voted and the top three acts were awarded.

Starting off the night, OHS juniors Dan Wall, Grant Cox and Andy Cornell, also accompanied by sophomore Joey Delaney, played a variety of instruments including the drums, guitar and trumpet. At one point during the performance, two trumpets were played by one musician simultaneously.

Second, sophomores David McCuskey, Joey Delaney and John Lensing performed. The trio presented the audience with a cover of “Under the Bridge” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Next, Elena Calderon sang the song “Cough Syrup” by indie-alternative rock band Young the Giant. Calderon also played the guitar during her performance.

Following the first three acts, emcees sophomore Chase Olson and junior Amanda Hauser announced that audience members would be pulled up on stage to compete in Minute to Win It challenges. The games took place after every three acts. Challenges included were to knock over solo cups with the air from a blown up balloon and pulling playing cards out from in between a stack of cups without knocking the tower down.

Fourth in the competition was freshman Grace Bloomquist. Bloomquist sang the musical number “Think of Me” from the famous play Phantom of the Opera.

Next to perform was junior Ava Lambert, who played a musical piece on the cello.

Rounding out the second set of three performances, Tully Morrison took the stage. He sang along with playing the guitar and harmonica.

After a second Minute to Win It challenge, Bosh and the Boschettes performed. Bosch, along with a group of students, used drumsticks on a variety of plastic and metal trash cans to create a beat. During the performance, the lights were fully shut off to accommodate the glow in the dark attire that the group wore.

Senior Alex St. Dennis follows Bosch and the Boschettes with a piano version of his original song entitled “Beauty Underground”. The song is available to listen to on St. Dennis’ SoundCloud profile.

Rounding out the show, Henry Larson got the crowd going by yoyoing. His routine was accompanied by a compilation of pop and rap songs.

After each act performed, the audience voted on who they thought had the most talent.

Emcees, Olson and Hauser, announced the winners. Third place: Grace Bloomquist. Second: David McCuskey, Joey Delaney and John Lensing. First place: Ava Lambert.

With another successful show completed, Orono students will prepare for next year’s competition. With each annual event, OHS students prove that they, indeed, got talent.
