The Spartan Speaks

Makena Yunker, Editor in Chief - Online

Named for the Hawaiian beach her parents were married on, Makena Yunker believes that there’s always a story waiting to be written. Her pen follows her passion as she manages the Spartan Speaks online, seeking out any story that interests her. Her helpful nature and penchant for perfection make her the ideal editor.

Makena came to Orono as a freshman and has been in Journalism for three years. She began her newspaper career writing about fashion and became the arts/entertainment editor two years later. Her high risk, high reward attitude led her to pursue Lacrosse and Orono’s Leadership Association in her spare time.

Thankfully, she has interests outside of correcting Oxford commas. She loves going out to eat at new places to try different foods, going to concerts and going outside when its warmer. Makena loves to read about the 1920’s, The Great Gatsby is her favorite book, but she’ll watch almost anything as long as she can get her hands on it.

Florida State and Texas Christian University are both at the top of her list as she plans to head south for college. She’s interested in majoring in international business with a minor in Spanish. Ultimately, after business or law school, she would like to work for a large global corporation.

Makena plans on making up for 18 years of lost time by getting the dog(s) she was never allowed to have at home due to her dad being allergic. She has planned out all of the different kinds of dogs that she wants and is ready to be “that person who is crazy about their dog all the time.”
