Bellecour is a new French restaurant in the space where Blue Point oyster bar used to be in downtown Wayzata.

Tucked in the hustle and bustle of downtown Wayzata now lies a French inspired bistro and bakery, Bellecour. The restaurant is owned by James Beard Award winning chef Gavin Kaysen, who is also the mastermind behind popular Minneapolis restaurant Spoon and Stable. Kaysen was a contestant on The Next Iron Chef and is known for his unique and delicious dishes.

Bellecour is built in the space where Blue Point Restaurant and oyster bar was previously located at 739 Lake Street East, Wayzata  Bellecour is named after a large central square in the town of Lyon, France where Chef Kaysen spends a lot of time traveling and finding inspiration for his recipes.

The french onion soup I had at Bellecour was the best french onion soup I’ve ever had. I’d definitely recommend it,

The anticipation for Bellecour had been rising throughout the winter. When they opened up reservations on Opentable on March 6, almost all the reservations available for the next two months were instantly snatched up.

The bakery part of Bellecour is the work of pastry chef Diane Yang. Yang has built up her reputation as a dessert master in the Minneapolis area by developing dessert ideas for Barrio, 112 Eatery, Crave, Spoon and Stable, Bar La Grassa, and now Bellecour. She is known for her phrase “simple is good.”

At the bakery they have a variety of pastries and desserts. There’s no need to fear, you don’t have to travel all the way to Paris for a delicious macaroon, Bellecour has macaroons that are extra big and very tasty. Their selection changes sometimes, but you are always sure to find some kind of tasty croissant and a few different flavors of macaroons.

When I was there, I grabbed a macchiato and a chocolate almond croissant for under $6 and I can honestly say that was the best croissant I’ve ever tasted. It had the perfect ratio of chocolate filling to bread and was sprinkled with almond slivers-it was so good.

The bakery has a classic French look with white tile and black accents and large windows that let natural light in. “It’s such a cute spot. I’d for sure hang out and do homework there while enjoying a pastry,” senior Carly Peterson said.

The bakery is open 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. daily and dinner is served at the restaurant 5:00 – 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday through Saturday and 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. on Sunday; no dinner is served on Mondays. The team hopes to expand into serving lunch in the next few months.
The menu at the restaurant contains classic french food like french onion soup, escargot, and duck, but also unique dishes like steak tartare and steamed mussels. You won’t find classic american meals such as a burger or pizza, so you might have to broaden your taste buds some. “The french onion soup I had at Bellecour was the best french onion soup I’ve ever had. I’d definitely recommend it,” senior Katie Kimmes said.
